Iris Basics: Tall Bearded Irises are beautiful and hardy, and will grow year after year with little maintenance on your part. They bloom in the Spring (and sometimes in late Summer and/or Fall for Rebloomers), and have attractive spikey foliage the remainder of the year. Irises prefer full sun and are very drought-tolerate. Like many Iris lovers, my collection started with a neighbor, asking "would you like some irises?" Irises spread easily and before long, you will have plenty to separate and place around your garden or share with friends, neighbors and family.
Planting Tips: Tall Bearded Irises prefer full sun, but will bloom with about a half day sun. A neutral Ph soil is best but they will grow in just about any well draining soil. You will receive freshly dug and washed rhizomes with a trimmed fan of green leaves. Plant the rhizome with the top either just barely below the surface of the soil or even with the top of the soil, with the green fan up. ln cold climates it is preferable to plant them a little deeper, no more that an inch deep. Water them well to get the roots started and then occasionally if needed. Once they are established they will need little watering, and most likely your normal rainfall will be sufficient.
What is a "Field Find?": Our "field finds" are unidentified irises that we have collected over the years (a NOID = No ID), either as gifts from friends and neighbors, dug up from old homesteads (with permission, of course!), found growing on our farm property, or literally dumped by the curb in an empty field. There are so many varieties of tall bearded irises that it would be difficult to positively identify them, but they are still too beautiful and special not to share.
